Coach’s Insight: CSUMB’s T.J. Velasquez on What They Look for in Recruits

January 3, 2025 – Ventura, CA

As we gear up for another Ventura Football Network Showcase, we’re excited to welcome back Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB) — an NCAA Division II program competing in the highly respected California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

This marks the second time CSUMB will attend one of our events, and we’re honored to have their coaching staff back to evaluate the next wave of top talent.
We recently caught up with Assistant Coach T.J. Velasquez for a quick interview on what they look for in players — and what advice he has for those stepping onto the field.

Meet Coach T.J. Velasquez

“I am the assistant coach for the Cal State Monterey Bay Men’s Soccer program. Our team is led by Head Coach Graeme Jaap, who is now in his seventh season and is the winningest coach in program history.”

What CSUMB Looks for in a Recruit

“We are looking for very fit players who absolutely love the game and want to grow — both as players and as people.

Work ethic is a non-negotiable in our program. We recruit players who have high expectations and demands for themselves on and off the field.

We also believe that people with high character make better teammates and players, and that mindset is something we look for right away.”

Advice for Showcase Players

“For any trial or showcase, the most important thing is to compete every second. Don’t waste a moment. Make sure you leave the pitch satisfied with your effort — because if you give your all, your performance will take care of itself.”

Why CSUMB Returns to VFN

“We’re excited to be part of this showcase for a second time. The caliber of players is very high, and this event continues to attract top-level talent. We’re looking forward to watching and recruiting players who are ready to compete and make an impact.”

Coach Velasquez and CSUMB are just one example of the high-level programs attending VFN Showcases. We’re proud to offer a platform that attracts serious scouts and creates real opportunities — and we thank Coach Velasquez for his insight and support of our mission.
